EN/OF

16.12.2011 - 04.03.2012

This winter De Hallen Haarlem was presenting solo exhibitions by three Dutch artists who share a strong intrinsic relation: Daan van Golden, Marijn van Kreij and Annesas Appel. A predilection for graphic patterns and the use of repetition as a stylistic device are corresponding features in their work. These were the first large solo museum exhibitions for Van Kreij and Appel in the Netherlands. On the occasion of Daan van Golden’s solo exhibition the project En/Of released an LP with music by Jefre Cantu-Ledesma and a record-sleeve with photography by Van Golden. A selection from the En/Ofeditions could both be seen and heard.

The edition project En/Of (And/Or) is an initiative of Berlin based curator and music publisher Robert Meijer (Beverwijk, 1977). Since 2001 he has been working on this project that aims to bring together visual art and music. The idea behind the En/Of series of editions is simple: ask both a musician and an artist to make a contribution that fits within the format of a record-sleeve. Each En/Of edition consists of an LP and an artwork, produced in an edition of 100.
En/Of is a logical extension to Meijer’s record labels Bottrop-Boy and Semishigure. The first label is used for releasing experimental music; the second is devoted to music with an artistic aspect, like the soundtracks Liam Gillick made for Sarah Morris’ videoworks or the soundworks of visual artist Christina Kubisch.
In the Kabinet a selection from the past 45 En/Of editions was shown and could be listened to as well. In addition, on the occasion of Daan van Golden’s solo exhibition, En/Of released an edition with Van Golden and the ambient/drone musician Jefre Cantu-Ledesma.

En/Of is a personal project. The musicians and artists exercise no influence on each other’s contribution. It is Meijer’s subjective view combined with his search for an associative relationship between art and music that bring the two together. In this way En/Of combines Jan Jelinek’s minimal techno with Sarah Morris’ modernistic interpretations, German artist Daniel Roth’s detective atmosphere with the suspenseful electronics of the experimental band Stilluppsteypa. With En/OfMeijer tries not so much to let the domains of visual art and music overlap (after all they remain separated), but to provocatively make use of the space for imagination that lies between the two disciplines. It is exceptional that Meijer knows how to commit the most relevant (and internationally known) contemporary artists and musicians to his project, which goes to show how much mutual interest there is between art and music.
